No Great Wall today, so we just ran errands
The plan was to go to the Great Wall today, but after stopping by some hostels we found that the section all of our friends suggested Jinshanling (金山嶺) to Simatai (司馬台) was closed, at least Simatai was closed for the summer. This kind of hurt our plan and we had to figure out what to do. The main area of the Great Wall, Badaling (八達嶺), was easy to get to, but then we would only have pictures of thousands of tourists. Both hostels we stopped at were offering day trips the next day so we decided to hold off. Charlotte had already been to the Great Wall so by doing a day trip I could go alone while Charlotte took care of other things. Instead we went shopping and got some pineapple juice beer which we had with lunch, one was pretty good while the other was horrid.
We spent most of the day either running errands, like mailing a lot of items Charlotte has bought to her friend near Hong Kong so we can just pick them up on the way out of China. Then we went back to the "fake" markets (秀水街) so I could pick up some more tshirts.
Scorpions!
At the end of the day we ended up back at Wangfujing (
王府井)where we ran across some tasty snacks and you know I couldn't resist! Although Charlotte wanted me to get the big one for better pictures I decided on the one with multiple scorpions. You obviously can't see it in the pictures, but they were still alive on the sticks before they got grilled. This is the 2nd time I had scorpion (first one was at Typhoon in Los Angeles) and I still think they are actually pretty good, but really only taste like what you season them with
